The Fireflies Festival is starting from May 17,2025 and will end on June 22, 2025. The firefly sighting starts around May 10, 2025, but barely few fireflies are visible during tht time. Proper glow begins only when it drizzles slightly. If it stays dry, sightings remain low. Smoke, Light-Pollution, and noise pollution impact a lot on the glow of fireflies. Avoid campsites that promote Bonfire, BBQ and Music.
Some locations may have delayed start and some might start glowing bit early depending on weather conditions in that region. Check out each location's detailed page for live updates.
Best Time to Visit:
Between May 24 and June 22. Aim for no-moon nights, and go on weekdays if possible — less crowd means more glow.

Phase Dates
Firefly Sighting
Experience
🌱 Early Glow May 10–15
😔 Low to Medium
Some blinking near bushes and tree trunks. Patchy areas glow if weather is supportive.
🌟 Peak Glow May 17 – June 22
😮 HIGH
Forests light up. Lakhs of fireflies can be seen in tree clusters. Best seen in dark & silent zones.
🌧️ Fading Glow June 24 – 30
😐 Medium to Low
Some glow remains in dry areas, but heavy rains reduce activity. Final week of the season.
Quick Tip:
❌ BBQ & Bonfire= Air Pollution= Fireflies Die.
❌ Live DJ Music = Sound Pollution = Low firefly sighting.
Best between May 17 – June 22. Peak glow depends on humidity and early pre-monsoon showers.
Glow Time:
Usually starts around 9:00 PM. Lasts until dawn if it’s dark, silent, and not crowded.
Don’t Use Flashlights:
Torch/phone flash scares them away. Glow comes back only after 10+ mins of darkness.
Silence is Key:
Loud groups disturb them. Whisper or stay silent to see the full glow dance.
Rain Helps, Heavy Rain Hurts:
Light rain = more glow. But constant heavy rain ruins visibility and terrain.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to trek at every fireflies location?
Not at all. Some locations like Bhandardara, Igatpuri, Karjat, and Purushwadi offer drive-in access. Others like Rajmachi and Kothaligad involve short treks.
Which locations are safe for senior citizens and kids?
Bhandardara, Igatpuri, Karjat, and Panshet are best suited for families, senior citizens, and kids. These locations do not involve trekking and have comfortable setups.
Where can I find less crowd?
If you want less crowd, choose weekdays over weekends. Locations like Siddhagad, Kamshet, and our Secret Camping Spot are known to be quieter even on weekends.
Can I book multiple locations in one season?
Yes! Many travelers book 2–3 weekends at different locations like Rajmachi, Sandhan, and Ghatghar to enjoy different terrains and glow zones.
Which location has the highest density of fireflies?
Sandhan Valley and Purushwadi (on good weather days) have the highest glow density. But it depends on silence, moon phase, and humidity — so no guarantees!
💡 Things You’ll wish you knew before visiting.
Sandhan Valley
Pros: Insane firefly density when conditions align. Feels like nature’s Diwali. Cons: Humidity kills comfort. Zero network. Camp only if you're okay with nature slapping back.
Purushwadi (READ THIS)
Pros: Historical glow legend. Locals know the terrain. Feels like an old-school village trip. Cons:THIS IS IMPORTANT: In the last 5 years, firefly population dropped by 90%.
Over-promotion of past sightings, Reducing number of fireflies in the region. Unless you are lucky, it’s not worth the hype anymore.
Rajmachi
Pros: Close to Mumbai/Pune, good forest coverage, glows well on cloudy moonless nights. Cons: Weekend chaos. Too many operators = too much noise = fewer fireflies. Go weekday.
Bhandardara
Pros: Easy to reach, family-friendly, glow near lake + forest, solid camping setups. Cons: Crowds on weekends, mist/fog can kill visibility, glow starts late (after 8 PM sometimes).
Fireflies Festival Map – All Locations
Here's a clear map showing the major firefly glowing locations across Maharashtra including Igatpuri, Bhandardara, Rajmachi, Karjat, and more.
That reel with a thousand fireflies? It’s either from 2017 or shot after 10PM on a weekday with no moon and zero people around. Don’t expect that on a Saturday night with 50 tourists yelling "Woohoo!"
Those tents lined up by the lake? Great for pictures, but at 3AM the wind turns that lake into a speaker. Your sleep? Good luck.
Bonfire + Fireflies? Nope. Fire hates light. Fireflies hate light. You can’t have both. You’re not doing BBQ and also watching a bioluminescent mating ritual.
“We saw 10,000 fireflies!” Sounds magical, right? Reality: You’ll see 100–300 if conditions are perfect. Still beautiful, but don’t get hypnotized by viral captions.
The glow dance? It lasts 45–90 mins max. Miss it, and you're just camping in darkness. No fireflies wait for your Uber.

Don’t Be That Group – Firefly Etiquette 101
You know the one. Bluetooth speaker, shouting “Broooooo!” every 5 mins, flashlight on forehead like Iron Man. If this is your vibe don’t come.
Fireflies are sensitive AF. They glow to attract a mate. You interrupt that, and it’s like barging into someone’s bedroom with a camera and a fog machine. Let them vibe in peace.
If you’re coming for reels and selfies, do it with respect. Silent reels. No flash. No crowd cheering. You’ll still get views, but so will the fireflies.
Want to smoke? Wait till they’re gone. Want to drink? Cool keep it chill. Just don’t turn the forest into a nightclub and wonder why it went dark.
